Wellness and Empowerment for Good Health

Since 2005 the Lancaster City Housing Authority's Hi-rises, Farnum Street East and Church Street Towers have been a clinical practicum site for student nurses attending the Lancaster General's Institute for Health Education.

Apart from the learning experience that the student nurses are seeking at our facilities specifically in the area of community nursing, the student nurses share their knowledge with residents in a variety of forums designed to promote a greater desire for health and wellness.

Additionally, the student nursing program provides individual monitoring visits in order to assist our residents with medication compliance, basic screenings such as blood pressure and glucose checks and related nutrition information. Mini health fairs and informal discussions are provided in the community room on a variety of health topics on a monthly basis.

The following are the Lancaster Institute for Health Education's objectives for the clinical experience offered in partnership with the Lancaster City Housing Authority:

  • Integrate principles from the biological, social and behavioral sciences in applying the nursing process to individual, family and community health needs.
  • Describe the role of the professional nurse in relation to the population group served.
  • Identify available community resources to assist the client to maintain function or to achieve a higher level of wellness.
  • Discuss environmental and cultural factors impacting upon the client(s) served.
  • Respond to specific individual and community needs through an education program and/or health fair.

The Lancaster General's Institute for Health Education is so pleased to have donated space and the support of the Lancaster City Housing Authority to bring true community nursing experience to their students less than a mile from their school and the Lancaster City Housing Authority is equally pleased to provide the student nursing program space as there is no cost for the program nor is the continuance of the program tied to grant funds.
